History - In August of 2010 Animal Friends Society, a 501 ( c ) ( 3 ) non-profit group, started small with the goal of helping Boone County Animal Control improve the quality of life for the animals in their care and increase their adoption rates. Our volunteers and donors cleaned kennels and walked dogs, improved the facility with new roofs on the outdoor kennels, showed animals at adoption events, and reached out to the community to create awareness of the animals there and continually raised funds for better quality dog food and more veterinary care. Volunteers also showed strong support for a new image for the department with a push for the eventual name change to Boone County Animal Services and Adoption Center.

Now - Animal Friends Society is a licensed foster based rescue! Our volunteers foster "at risk" dogs pulled from full intake shelters across northern Illinois, saving lives and giving these animals a second chance. Our foster homes provide a feeling of safety and security for these dogs, and a level of socialization that is simply not possible in a shelter situation. Fostering allows us to focus on an animal's true personality. AFSBC volunteers are then able to train these dogs who are displaying their natural behaviors and not simply stress behaviors. AFSBC is also able to provide extensive rehabilitation to those dogs who need it. In addition, Animal Friends Society has started a Farm and Feral Cat Spay and Neuter program for Boone County residents. This program is designed to humanely reduce the overpopulation of these animals and address the misery from starvation, car deaths, and cruel abuse at human hands, that these animals otherwise face. Our volunteers spend their weekends at local adoption events and fundraisers for these and other programs including collections for our Veterinary Relief Fund and donations to the Boone County Food Pantry's Pet Food Pantry.
